India Today MOTN: Prem Singh Tamang Tops Small States at 53.9%, Down From 62.1% in Feb

Gangtok, 29th August: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang continues to lead the small states in the latest India Today Mood of the Nation (MOTN) poll. However, his approval rating has dropped from 62.1 per cent in February 2025 to 53.9 per cent in August 2025, reflecting an 8.2 percentage point decline over six months. Out of 300 respondents sampled in Sikkim, 53.9 per cent expressed satisfaction with his leadership, placing him comfortably at the top despite the decline.

Earlier in February 2025, Tamang had topped the most popular CM (home state) category in the India Today MOTN survey with 62.1 per cent.

The biannual survey, conducted by India Today and CVoter across states with less than 10 Lok Sabha seats, placed Tamang ahead of Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.

In comparison, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu secured second place with 41.6 per cent approval, almost unchanged from February’s 42 per cent. Tripura’s Dr. Manik Saha rose slightly to 40.4 per cent from 39 per cent earlier. Meghalaya’s Conrad Sangma registered 38.6 per cent, while Mizoram’s Lalduhoma stood at 38.4 per cent—both showing marginal improvements since the last poll.

Reacting to the survey, Tamang said the recognition was not just a personal milestone but proof of the trust and support of the Sikkimese people. “This honour belongs entirely to the proud people of Sikkim, whose collective strength, resilience, and determination inspire our journey of progress,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Governor Om Prakash Mathur, and state leaders for their guidance and support, while dedicating the achievement to the people of Sikkim.

The Mood of the Nation poll, first launched in 2001, is one of India’s most widely cited opinion surveys. Conducted every year around Republic Day and Independence Day, it tracks political and governance trends across the country.
