SIKKIM OBSERVES 50 YEARS SINCE EMERGENCY WITH STATEWIDE PROGRAMME

Gangtok, 25th June: Sikkim today joined the rest of India in observing Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas, marking 50 years since the Emergency was declared in the country on June 25, 1975.

A main event was held at Manan Kendra in Gangtok, where Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang was the chief guest. Similar programmes also took place in different schools, colleges, and districts as per the instructions from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

During the programme, the Chief Minister spoke about how the Emergency, which lasted for 21 months, seriously affected the Indian Constitution and democratic rights. Although it was officially declared due to concerns about national stability, many believe it was mainly done to keep political power. He remembered those who were jailed or faced hardships during that time, saying that their struggle helped restore democracy.

He emphasized the importance of the Constitution, saying it not only gives people rights but also responsibilities. He encouraged the younger generation, educators, and civil society to learn about the Emergency and its long-term effects. The Chief Minister also said that Sikkim has seen positive democratic development since joining India as its 22nd state.

The programme began with a traditional presentation of the Sengol to the Chief Minister by Minister G.T. Dhungel. Patriotic songs in Hindi and Nepali were performed by artists from the Culture Department, and a short documentary on the Emergency was screened.

Dr. Dilip Pandey from Sikkim Law College explained the legal background of the Emergency. He referred to the court case that led to the disqualification of the then Prime Minister and discussed how democratic systems can be weakened without proper checks and balances. He also mentioned the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, who led a major movement to protect democracy.

Many dignitaries were present, including the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Ministers, MLAs, senior government officials, Zilla Panchayat members, and other representatives from across the state.

The welcome address was given by Culture Secretary Basant Kumar Lama.
