Sikkim’s Abhista Basnett wins Most Valuable Player as India clinch SAFF Under-17 Women’s Championship title

Gagntok, 1st September: Rising football talent Abhista Basnett, a 14-year-old from Pakyong District, has brought glory to Sikkim by winning the Most Valuable Player Award at the SAFF U17 Women’s Championship 2025 in Bhutan. Abhista made a big impact for India throughout the tournament, finishing with four goals and three assists in six matches.

Despite India’s only defeat in their final game, a 3-4 loss to Bangladesh at Changlimithang Stadium on August 31, the Young Tigresses were crowned champions. They had already secured the top spot in the points table with five wins and just one defeat, making their title win unassailable.

While Anushka Kumari won the Top Goalscorer Award with eight goals, it was Abhista who stood out for her all-round performance. Her goals, assists, and creative play made her a vital part of India’s campaign, earning her recognition as one of the brightest young footballers in the country.

For Sikkim, Abhista’s achievement is a proud milestone, as her journey from the hills of Pakyong to the international stage continues to inspire young athletes. The Indian team will now travel to Bengaluru to prepare for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers in October, where Abhista will once again aim to make her mark.
