New Delhi, 11 January: Prashant Tamang, the celebrated singer and actor from Darjeeling who won Indian Idol Season 3 and became a cultural icon for the Gorkha community, passed away today at the age of 43. He was declared brought dead at a hospital in Dwarka, Delhi, around 9:00 AM after returning from a performance in Arunachal Pradesh. Reports suggest he had been unwell for the past three days, though he had no major health complaints prior to his sudden death.
Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Tamang grew up in modest circumstances. After losing his father at a young age, he joined the Kolkata Police as a constable to support his family, performing in the police orchestra. His journey to fame began in 2007 when he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3. Winning the competition, Tamang captured the hearts of millions across India and abroad, becoming the first singer from the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community to gain national recognition.
Following his success on Indian Idol, Tamang released several albums, performed internationally, and became a prominent figure in Nepali cinema. His recent foray into acting included appearances in Indian digital content, most notably as Sniper Daniel Lecho in the critically acclaimed web series Paatal Lok Season 2.
