SRM University Assistant Professor Booked in Alleged Rape Case in Gangtok, Faculty Suspended

Gangtok, 20th December: The Sadar Police Station has registered a case against an Assistant Professor of SRM University Sikkim in connection with an alleged rape case.

According to police, the case has been registered under Sadar PS Case dated December 18, 2025, under Sections 63 and 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

As per the FIR, a 21-year-old female student from West Sikkim, presently residing in Gangtok, alleged that she met the accused through social media and communicated with him for a few days. She further alleged that the accused repeatedly pressured her to meet him. Though she initially refused and requested to meet in a public place, she later agreed to visit his room at Lingding, Gangtok, on December 6, 2025, after he assured her of her safety, citing his professional status.

The complainant alleged that during the meeting, the accused misbehaved with her and touched her inappropriately. She further alleged that despite her resistance, the accused forcibly raped her against her will. Following the alleged incident, she reportedly fled the location in a state of shock and trauma.

Police said the complainant delayed approaching the police due to fear of social stigma, lack of parental support, and concerns related to her ongoing examinations. The case is currently under investigation.

Meanwhile, SRM University Sikkim, in a press release, stated that it has been made aware of an alleged incident involving a faculty member that reportedly occurred outside the university premises. The university said it is fully cooperating with the concerned authorities and will extend all support as required under law.

The university further informed that, pending the outcome of due process, the individual concerned has been suspended from all roles and responsibilities with immediate effect. Reiterating its stand, SRM University Sikkim said it follows a zero-tolerance approach towards any conduct inconsistent with the law and the ethical standards expected of members of the academic community.
